The state of progressive house in 2026

Wed, 14 Oct 2026 09:00:00 +1300

I’ve been a progressive house guy for as long as I’ve been a DJ. Deep driving basslines that make you feel like you are going somewhere you will never reach, and twenty-something years later I still reach for a long, patient, building set if I really want to get things done. So this year, with everyone banging on about melodic techno and Afro house, I wanted to answer a question that’s been nagging me: is progressive house still the same old timers at number one, or is there finally a new generation taking the flag?

Probably the 50 greatest DJ mixes of all time.

Thu, 01 Oct 2026 09:00:00 +1300

I’ve been DJing for the best part of two decades, and I’ve spent more hours listening to other people’s mixes than I have working - in the car, at my desk, waiting in airports, on my (sweet) yellow walkman on the way to school. And as I was looking for inspiration, I figured I’d fire up an AI swarm, query the internet and share the results.

Success is like Tetris

Mon, 14 Sep 2026 09:00:00 +1200

If you’ve ever played Tetris you know this feeling.

The stack is getting high. You’ve left one column open down the side, a nice deep well, and you’ve been filling in everything around it for what feels like forever. Three rows. Four rows. Everything tidy, everything ready. Now you’re just waiting for the long straight piece.

I'm writing a book

Sat, 29 Aug 2026 12:00:00 +1200

I’m writing a book.

There. That’s the hard part done, because one of the chapters in it is about how your word is the most valuable thing you own - say what you’ll do, then do it. Which makes announcing this a slightly uncomfortable thing to be doing, and that’s rather the point. It’s a lot easier to abandon something nobody knows about.

We create our own drama

Sat, 24 Jan 2026 08:30:00 +1200

Think back to the calmest, most stable stretch of your life. Good job, decent health, nothing on fire. Now try to remember what you were upset about at the time.

There’ll be something. There’s always something.

I’ve got a theory about why, and it isn’t that you’re a dramatic person.

Your brain is a problem-solving machine

That’s the job. That’s the whole job. It takes in the world, finds the gap between how things are and how they could be, and works the gap. It’s very good at it. It’s the reason we’re not still living in trees.

Educating for tomorrow

Sat, 21 Jun 2025 09:00:00 +1200

We’re currently living through the early years of the most significant technological shift since the printing press. Artificial intelligence can now write essays, pass bar exams, diagnose diseases, generate art, write code, and hold conversations that fool most people into thinking they’re talking to another human. It does all of this for approximately the cost of electricity. And it’s getting better every few months in ways that make last year’s version look quaint.

Rolling your own HubSpot SDK in Laravel with the HTTP client

So your boss / client / lover? Comes to you and says, “Have you used a CRM before? I think we need one, but I’m not willing to pay any money for it right now and I’ve heard HubSpot is good. Can you integrate it with our website?”. And you take a quick look and see they have an extensive API and you go “Sure, looks ok at face value - I’ll do it…”.

Guide to the art of djing - Intermediate

Tue, 13 Oct 2020 11:00:00 +0000

I have been mixing music as a DJ for going on some 18+ years now (you can check me out here), and felt I should really share some of my knowledge with those who might be starting out or want some direction on how to improve on the fundamentals.

This tutorial (of sorts), is aimed at beginner to intermediate level Dj’s - so I’ll presume you already know your way around the basics: A mixer and a pair of CDJ’s, Turntables, Controller and/or DJ software, how to plug it all in and Beat Matching if applicable. What you use doesn’t matter as the same principles apply and there are lots of great resources and videos covering all this. So what I’ll be talking about is techniques that will help elevate your mixing skills to the next level.

Fundamentals of a functional team: Clear the way for each others progress.

Sat, 21 Dec 2019 11:00:00 +0000

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to spend some time in some absolutely amazing teams. I love the people, working together was fun and fulfilling even when the work itself was shit or incredibly stressful. And I can genuinely say I looked forward to going to work in the morning.

Of course, it hasn’t all been cinnamon buns and rainbows, I have also watched teams fall apart - imploding into states of willful self destruction, paranoid delusions, communication break down or open hostility. And to be frank, witness to some pretty shameful behavior.

The learning journey and how to succeed

Wed, 21 Jun 2017 10:02:58 +0000

I believe that this cycle is one of humanity’s greatest abilities and think it should be studied, understood and encouraged in all. Nothing I cover here should really be a surprise, but I find it’s always good to consult and remember this when the going gets tough. After all, if you can learn how to learn, you can do anything, right? But no-one has ever said it would be easy.

Noobs guide to getting a Code Signing Certificate.

Sat, 10 Dec 2016 10:02:58 +0000

I’ve just completed my first code signed Windows App, Style for Windows and found the process to be a bit of a nightmare for the uninitiated.

In many cases I found it was presumed that you already have a certificate, but no one told me what I actually needed to do to get to this point - so this is a write up how to become eligible for a certificate and get one onto your computer.

About

Mon, 01 Jan 0001 00:00:00 +0000

HUNTER IN THE WOODS is one man, William Tonkin-Howe.

The HUNTER IN THE WOODS name is derived from a recurring dream I have had since I was a boy, where I’m hunting in the snow by myself. Breath loud in my ears and hanging in the air. Snow crunching underfoot. I’m hungry, but happy that I have found my prey. Red blood stains the bright white snow and I struggle towards my survival.
